Innovation, sustainability, and collaboration define a year of achievements for the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project
The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project focuses on developing natural fumigants based on plant extracts to combat pests such as the whitefly and fungal outbreaks like Botrytis in greenhouse horticultural crops, reducing dependence on conventional chemical pesticides.
Led by FumiHogar, the project collaborates with B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and Fundación Finnova. It is 60% funded by the European Union’s LIFE program, with a total budget of €2.7 million. In 2024, key activities included workshops in Almería, where farmers and technicians discussed the use of innovative biopesticides. Additionally, the project’s advancements were showcased at ExpoAgritech 2024 in Málaga, a leading event in agricultural technology.
During the 2024 European Green Week, a hybrid webinar was held at the Tecnova headquarters in Almería, focusing on toxic-free agriculture. The event highlighted the technical progress of LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, promoted sustainable solutions to replace conventional pesticides, and fostered synergies with stakeholders in the sector, reinforcing its commitment to the European Green Deal objectives.
Throughout 2024, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN has made significant strides in its mission to enhance agricultural sustainability and biodiversity. Looking ahead to 2025, the project plans to validate the efficacy of its fumigants in new crops and countries, further strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
Following the withdrawal of the European Commission’s proposal to reduce pesticide use, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN positions itself as an innovative and sustainable alternative. As Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, remarked, “Agriculture must transition toward a more sustainable model to ensure profitability and position farmers as leaders of change.”
Looking to the future, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN will continue aligning its roadmap with the European Green Deal and the “Farm to Fork” Strategy, demonstrating that safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly agriculture is achievable.
