The EU project, with a budget of €2.7 million co-financed by the LIFE Programme, develops natural fumigants from plant extracts to advance agricultural sustainability
Brussels, 12th September 2025. The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety has confirmed that biological plant protection products containing micro-organisms “may be as effective as chemicals when used correctly in optimal conditions.” These products, by targeting a narrower range of harmful organisms, are considered safer for biodiversity and human health. They also play a key role in organic farming and within Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is mandatory across the EU.
In this context, the European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN addresses the challenge of offering safe and sustainable alternatives for pest control in agriculture. With a budget of €2,758,921.01, co-financed 60% by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, the consortium is developing natural fumigants from plant extracts to control whitefly and botrytis in greenhouse crops.
The project, coordinated by the Spanish company FumiHogar, involves B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech and the Finnova Foundation. Over its four-and-a-half-year duration, NextFUMIGREEN aims to contribute to food security, biodiversity preservation and the professionalisation of farmers in the use of innovative biopesticides.
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN positions itself as a strategic initiative in line with the priorities of the European Green Deal and the EU’s objective to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, providing concrete solutions to the challenges of sustainable agriculture in a changing climate.
