LIFE NextFUMIGREEN strengthens the sector’s resilience with natural pest control solutions
Brussels, 11th August 2025. On 28 July, the European Commission published its “Short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets – Summer 2025” report, providing forecasts for the main agri-food sectors in the EU. The report highlights a high degree of uncertainty driven by extreme weather, geopolitical instability and input cost pressures (fertilisers, feed, energy).
In this context, the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project offers a strategic tool to build resilience in intensive greenhouse farming. The project aims to develop a plant-based fumigant to replace chemical pesticides, particularly against whiteflies and botrytis outbreaks in horticultural crops.
The EU report calls for greater sustainability in production systems, a reduction in dependency on external inputs and the adoption of innovation to ensure profitability without compromising food safety or soil health.
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN addresses these challenges through a practical approach. The natural biopesticide under development helps reduce chemical dependency, promotes biodiversity and supports more responsible use of resources. The project also includes training and capacity-building activities to support farmers and agricultural technicians in the adoption of safer, cleaner technologies.
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is coordinated by FumiHogar, in partnership with B&B Asesores, Tecnova, Comercial Química Massó, Tecnova, BrioAgro Tech and Fundación Finnova. The project has a total budget of €2,758,921.01 and is 60% co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme.
