The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project is developing natural fumigants from plant extracts to reduce the use of chemical pesticides in greenhouse-grown tomatoes and peppers
Brussels, September 2nd, 2025. Smoke may become one of the keys to more sustainable agriculture. With this innovative approach, the European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is working on the development of natural fumigants made from plant extracts to control pests such as whiteflies and diseases like botrytis in greenhouse crops.
The project, 60% co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme, has a total budget of €2,758,921.01 and a duration of 54 months. Its aim is to demonstrate that fumigant biopesticides can be an effective and less toxic alternative to conventional chemical pesticides, reducing risks to farmers’ health and the environment.
Among the advantages of this system is its autonomous, ready-to-use format, which ensures proper dosage without the need for machinery, avoids accidental spills, and does not increase humidity in crops, thereby reducing fungal proliferation.
Coordinated by the Spanish company FUMI-HOGAR, the consortium also includes Fundación Tecnova, Finnovaregio, B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó and BrioAgro Tech. Together, they are working to improve food safety, protect biodiversity, and contribute to European goals for pesticide reduction under the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy and the Common Agricultural Policy.
