The project showcased its natural fumigant approach as a safer alternative to conventional plant protection products at Europe’s leading agri-food policy forum
Brussels, Tuesday 17 December 2025. The European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN took part in the EU Agri-Food Days 2025, held from 15 to 17 December in Brussels, a flagship European Union forum focused on the future of agriculture, food security and the sustainability of the agri-food sector.
During the event, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN was represented by Aleix Castells, Communication Officer at the Finnova Foundation in Belgium, who presented the project’s objectives, progress and innovative approach to policymakers, research organisations, agri-food companies and representatives of other European projects.
The project’s participation took place in a context marked by the European debate on the reduction of conventional plant protection products and the need to promote safer and more sustainable alternatives, in line with the priorities of the European Green Deal and EU crop protection strategies.
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN addresses one of the main challenges of greenhouse horticulture: the effective control of pests such as whitefly and fungal diseases like botrytis, through the development of natural fumigants based on plant extracts, which are less toxic than conventional products currently in use.
Beyond technological development, the project also focuses on validation under real cultivation conditions, farmer training and the professionalisation of biopesticide use, contributing to improved food safety, biodiversity protection and reduced risks to human health and the environment.
The presence of LIFE NextFUMIGREEN at the EU Agri-Food Days has helped to strengthen the project’s visibility at European level, establish strategic contacts with key agri-food stakeholders and align its results with EU priorities on sustainable agriculture and crop protection innovation.
