WEBINAR LIFE NextFUMIGREEN during the European Week of Regions and Cities 2023 (EU Regions Week)

Brussels, November 6th, 2023. Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th, from 10:00 to 11:30 (Brussels time), the European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN will host a webinar as part of the parallel events of the EU Regions Week 2023. The webinar is titled “Innovative natural fumigants for a sustainable Europe. LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project and its benefits on the environment.”

Nowadays, biocidal active substances used in Europe consist mainly of chemical compounds. The issues stemming from the excessive use of pesticides remain a concern for environmental sustainability and global stability. In fact, their global usage has increased by 50% in the last 30 years, with an annual application of 2.5 million tons of commercial pesticides. Fumigant biocides have been a common method of control for decades in the fields of Public Health, Food Hygiene, and Animal Health. In response, the European Union is imposing restrictions on their use and advocating for the promotion of sustainable alternatives that safeguard environmental health and food safety.

The event aims to emphasize the significance of utilizing a new type of fumigant phytosanitary product based on natural origin active ingredients in protecting the most representative crops in greenhouses. To achieve this, discussions will cover the results of the LIFE NextFumigreen project with Carlos Ramos Hernández, Operations Manager at FUMI-HOGAR, and Agustín Quesada López, EU Projects Manager at FINNOVA Foundation (EU).

During the webinar, the key innovations of this pioneering project will be explained, along with the benefits it will bring to Europe in terms of food security, sustainability, and climate change.

A panel of experts will analyze the state of European legislation in this field and the future steps to be taken, with the notable participation of Ms. Mazaly Aguilar, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) of the European Parliament, and Mr. Heijo Höfer, Member of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR).

Juanma Revuelta, CEO of the FINNOVA Foundation (EU), will discuss European funding and the LIFE Program.

To conclude, there will be a roundtable for the exchange of best practices with examples from other approved projects. Sandra Aldaz del Burgo, a biologist at INTIA, will speak about LIFE-IP NAdapta; Lars T. BERGER, Chief Technology Officer at Pulverizadores Fede, will present the advancements of the Life-AIs project, and Carolina Martínez Gaitán head of R&D  at the Technological Center Tecnova, will explain the Rustica project.
