EU Environment and Energy Ministers stress in Valladolid the need to focus on pesticides that do not pollute the soil

First day of the EU Environment and Energy ministerial meeting under Spanish presidency

The meeting will last until Wednesday, with sessions focused on an in-depth debate on the soil-water-biodiversity system.

The European project LIFE Next Fumigreen will test the efficacy of a new type of fumigant plant protection product, based on active ingredients of natural origin.

12/07/2023, Brussels. Monday July 10 at 10:00 (CEST) the first day of the informal ministerial meeting on environment and energy was held in Valladolid. During the meeting, the need to focus on pesticides that do not pollute the soil was emphasized, an objective developed by the European project LIFE Next Fumigreen.

The working sessions of these days will focus on the priorities of the Spanish Presidency within the framework of the objectives of the European green agenda, including the preservation of spaces as a support for the production capacity of the primary sector over the coming decades. In addition, the issues to be discussed during this meeting will be addressed with a view to the next United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held in December in Dubai.

The environment managers developed the agenda of this first day in three blocks. First, the integrated management of soils, water, forests and biodiversity was discussed. The second part of the day focused on existing alternatives to reduce pollution of the seas. Finally, the third block explored the need to balance the implementation of renewable energies with land management and the protection and conservation of biodiversity.

In the subsequent meeting, Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, has appeared. Sinkevičius has defended the cross-cutting approach of the measures proposed, since “problems such as biodiversity loss or food security cannot be dealt with separately, being issues that reinforce each other”. Right now, according to the commissioner, one of the biggest open fronts is the use of pesticides that contaminate soils, so it is key to help farmers, helping them to apply techniques and tools that help to reduce their use.

LIFE Next Fumigreen

Related to the Commissioner’s statements, the Life NEXTFUMIGREEN project will test the efficacy of a new type of fumigant plant protection product, based on active ingredients of natural origin, in the protection of the most representative greenhouse crops. The main objective of the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project is to develop natural fumigants, based on active ingredients extracted from plant extracts, for the control of whitefly populations (Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum) and fungal outbreaks of botrytis (Botrytis cinerea) in horticultural crops grown intensively under glass.

Led by the Spanish company FumiHogar, the project has five other partners: the Foundation for Agricultural Auxiliary Technologies (TECNOVA); the Finnova Foundation; B&B Asesores Auditores Ambientales; Comercial Quimica Masso; and BrioAgro Tech. With a total budget of 2,758,921.01 €, 60% subsidized by the LIFE program, the project will have a duration of 4 years and 6 months, until May 31, 2027.

The conference will continue tomorrow and will focus on the challenges to be presented at the next COP 28 and the improvements that can be made in communicating the opportunities of the energy and climate agenda.
