- The project’s lead company is responsible for producing sustainable fumigation technology for intensive agriculture.
The European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, led by the Malaga-based company Fumi-Hogar, is developing innovative natural fumigation technology based on plant extracts for pest control in greenhouses. Carlos Ramos, Operations Director at Fumi-Hogar and a key figure in the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project, recently shared key details about the technology Fumi-Hogar is developing in an interview.
In a video available on YouTube, Ramos highlights Fumi-Hogar’s fundamental role in the project and its mission to create innovative and sustainable solutions for pest control in greenhouses.
In Ramos’ words, “Our work contributes to improving food security by providing farmers with a tool that complies with all European restrictions and regulations, allowing them to move their crops forward with maximum efficiency.” This technology aims to offer farmers a safer and less toxic alternative to conventional pesticides, while also enhancing biodiversity and food security.
Innovation and Tradition at Fumi-Hogar
Founded in Malaga in 1967, Fumi-Hogar has established itself as a pioneer in the manufacture of autonomous, pre-dosed fumigants for sectors such as public health, food hygiene, and agriculture. “What we bring to the table is the combination of fumigation technology, which we’ve been working with for over 60 years, and biopesticides to control pests in greenhouses,” says Ramos.
“This application method minimizes soil and water contamination and optimizes the biopesticide’s ability to target the pest,” he explains. In this way, Fumi-Hogar positions itself at the forefront of sustainability amid increasing concerns about the environmental impact of intensive agriculture.
With a total budget of €2,758,921.01 and 60% funding from the European Union’s LIFE program, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN brings Fumi-Hogar together with partners such as B&B Asesores, Tecnova, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and the Finnova Foundation. Over the next four and a half years, the project will develop innovative tools to support farmers in adopting sustainable and effective pest control techniques.
“The use of natural fumigants contributes to the professionalization of farmers in biopesticides and promotes a safer and more sustainable agriculture,” adds Ramos, highlighting the importance of this innovation for intensive crops and food production.
