Fumi-Hogar Leads LIFE NextFUMIGREEN: Innovation in Natural Fumigants for More Sustainable Agriculture
Brussels, November 15, 2024 – On Friday, November 8, the first successful trials of natural fumigants based on plant extracts were conducted at Tecnova’s facilities in Almería. These trials are a crucial step for the implementation of pilot programs in greenhouses throughout Spain, within the framework of the European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN. The goal of these pilots is to evaluate the effectiveness of natural fumigants in controlling pests such as whiteflies and botrytis outbreaks, presenting a more eco-friendly and less toxic alternative to conventional pesticides.

The initiative is supported by strategic partners such as B&B Asesores, Tecnova, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and the Finnova Foundation, an entity recognized for its commitment to innovation and sustainability in Europe.
A Solution for Sustainable Intensive Agriculture
Founded in Málaga in 1967, Fumi-Hogar combines more than six decades of experience in fumigant technology with the development of advanced biopesticides that reduce environmental impact. This new technology not only minimizes soil and water contamination but also optimizes pest control, as can be seen in the following video:

Finnova: Facilitating the Sustainable Transition
The Finnova Foundation plays a key role in the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project, facilitating the transfer of knowledge and promoting the adoption of innovative technologies that drive the transition to more sustainable agriculture. The project also supports the goals of the European Green Deal, providing solutions that reduce reliance on conventional methods and encourage more eco-friendly food production.
Next Steps and Future Outlook
With the launch of the pilot programs in greenhouses, the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project advances in its goal of transforming intensive agriculture into a safer and more sustainable model. The collaboration among strategic partners ensures the success of the initiative, which aligns with the goals of the European Green Deal and EU agricultural policies.
About LIFE NextFUMIGREEN
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is a European project aimed at developing natural fumigants from plant extracts to control populations of whiteflies and botrytis fungal outbreaks in greenhouse horticultural crops. Led by FumiHogar and funded at 60% by the EU’s LIFE program, the project will span four and a half years to test the effectiveness of a new, less toxic fumigant biopesticide compared to conventional methods. With a total budget of €2,758,921.01, this project seeks to enhance food safety and biodiversity while contributing to the professionalization of farmers in the use of biopesticides.
