LIFE NextFUMIGREEN joins World Food Day with its commitment to sustainable agriculture and safer food

  • Every 16 October, FAO celebrates World Food Day to promote the goal of zero hunger worldwide
  • The European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN contributes to this mission through natural solutions that enhance agricultural production without compromising human health or the environment

Brussels, 16 October 2025.  Since 1979, World Food Day, promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has reminded us of the urgent need to ensure that everyone has access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. This annual event, held every 16 October, is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, particularly the global objective of achieving Zero Hunger.

Aligned with this purpose, the European project LIFE NextFUMIGREEN is developing natural fumigants based on plant extracts as a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides used in greenhouse horticultural crops. This innovation supports healthier, safer and more environmentally friendly agricultural production, reducing environmental impact and helping to deliver higher-quality food.

Innovation for safer food systems

The natural solutions developed by LIFE NextFUMIGREEN help preserve beneficial insects, protect consumer health, and reduce soil and water contamination — all key factors in ensuring the long-term sustainability of food systems.

With a total budget of €2,758,921.01, co-financed at 60% by the European Union’s LIFE Programme, the project is led by FumiHogar in collaboration with B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and the Finnova Foundation.

On the occasion of World Food Day, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN reaffirms its commitment to sustainable agricultural innovation and to building a production model that balances farm profitability, public health and environmental protection.
