The European project develops fumigants based on plant extracts that reduce environmental impact, protect biodiversity and improve food quality
Brussels, 21 July 2025. The consortium of the LIFE NextFUMIGREEN project has released a new audiovisual resource focused on the benefits of using natural fumigants as an alternative to chemical pesticides in greenhouse horticultural crops. The 50-second video, subtitled in English, clearly summarises the advantages of this European innovation developed with scientific and technological foundations.
The use of fumigants made from plant extracts offers an effective solution to control pests such as whiteflies and diseases like botrytis. This alternative helps reduce dependence on chemical products, minimises the environmental impact associated with their use, preserves beneficial insects in the agricultural ecosystem and maintains fruit quality without affecting their development or food safety.
LIFE NextFUMIGREEN provides a sustainable response to current challenges in the agricultural sector. The new biopesticide under development is positioned as a viable tool for farmers and technicians seeking to improve the profitability of their farms without compromising the health of the environment or that of consumers.
The project has a total budget of €2,758,921.01 and is co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme, which covers 60% of the total. Led by the company FumiHogar, the consortium also includes B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech and Fundación Finnova. Over its four-and-a-half-year duration, the project carries out trials, technical validations and training activities to promote professionalisation in the use of biopesticides.
